How to know that you are pregnant?

Updated: Oct 4, 2019

The first indication of the pregnancy is a missed period. If you have a regular menstrual cycle and if you have missed your period by more than a week, then check for the pregnancy with the help of following:

· A urine pregnancy test at home

These kits are easily available at any medical store. You just need to put some drops of urine (preferably, first urine in the morning) on the test template and the result is given in some seconds. The best one is Preganews by Mankind. If that is not available in a store near you, go for any other brand, as all these kits are reliable.

These kits will have a test template and a dropper. With the help of dropper, put 3-4 drops of urine in the well given on the test template. In some seconds, it will show the result. If there are 2 lines, it is positive. If there is one line it shows negative. However, if no line appears, the test has failed. Repeat the test with a new kit. Please note that while testing you need to ensure that you see the result immediately. After some time, when the test kit dries, it may show different result.

· A Blood Test

Any pathology lab will do the HCG test. Your blood sample will be taken and you will get result in some hours. Presence of HCG in your blood is an indication that you are pregnant.

HCG is "Human Chorionic Gonadotropin," the pregnancy hormone. hCG enters the blood soon after implantation and is detected via pregnancy tests. hCG starts to be produced by the placenta as soon as implantation occurs. This happens about one week after fertilization and ovulation when the embryo implants and the placenta attaches to the uterine lining.

Normal hCG Values In Pregnancy:

· Blood hCG under 5 mIU/ml: Negative. Not pregnant

· Blood hCG between 5-25 mIU/ml: "Equivocal". Maybe pregnant maybe not. Repeat test in a couple of days

· Blood hCG over 25 mIU/ml: You are pregnant!

· One single hCG reading is not enough to make a clear diagnosis. Several hCG tests days apart give a more accurate assessment of the situation.

The HCG level should almost double after 2-3 days. So repeat the blood test, to ensure your pregnancy.

· An Ultra sound Scan

At a very early stage, the ultra sound scan will not help though. The fetus is visible on an ultra sound only after 6 weeks of pregnancy. If your HCG levels are high, indicating more than 6 weeks than go for an ultrasound.

You might experience some symptoms like blood spotting or slight abdominal pain during implantation. This is completely normal.
