Menstrual taboos....long way to go!!!

We all know that periods in women are essential for reproduction. We are in 21st century now but still a girl in menses or menstrual blood is considered impure in many cultures.

There was a lack of understanding on this topic many years back. But now we know that menstrual blood is nothing but blood shed from uterus, mixed with some tissues that comes out every month when there is no pregnancy. Then why is it still a taboo for girls?

Menstruating woman is not impure or cursed. Menstruation is the most natural process. If a young girl does not start getting periods till 14 - 16 years of age its a cause for concern.

In ancient Era, maintaining good hygiene was the issue. Unavaibility of sanitary pads, clean water, soaps might have made ancient people think that women cannot enter kitchen during that time. But today doing all of these will not harm anyone.

Also forcing women to not offer prayers in this time is commonly followed practice. It's the choice of women if she wants to follow religious sentiments by not offering prayers when in periods.

It is a difficult road ahead for women to free herself from this taboo.. But that should not stop her from taking small steps.
